How Can I Get a Breast Lift Without Scars?

b
When it comes to obtaining perkier, more youthful looking breasts, a breast lift (also called a mastopexy) is often the procedure of choice. This powerful rejuvenation technique can address sagging, excess skin while repositioning the nipple-areola complex to a higher position on the chest wall. However, for all of the benefits that a breast lift can provide, many patients also express concerns about scarring. Below, our Atlanta plastic surgeon, Dr. Thomas Lintner, outlines how the procedure works and what patients can expect with regards to breast lift scarring.

In the majority of cases, a breast lift or breast lift with implants requires one or more incisions to reduce skin laxity and elevate the breasts to a higher, more youthful position. Many women considering this procedure worry that the resulting scars will be highly visible. So, is a breast lift without scars possible? Incision-less mastopexy (breast lift surgery) has yet to be developed, but it is possible to minimize the appearance of scars to the point that they are barely noticeable. The precise nature of breast lift scars will ultimately depend on the technique used during surgery. Possible incision patterns include:

Periareolar Mastopexy: the periareolar or “donut” breast lift technique involves a single incision encircling the areola. Dr. Linter uses his advanced expertise to blend the resulting incision seamlessly into the pigmented outer edge of the areolae for the most discreet scarring possible. It should be noted that this technique is typically performed when a smaller degree of lifting is desired.

Anchor Mastopexy: the anchor technique—known as a “full mastopexy”—involves an incision encircling the areola, an incision extending vertically from the areola towards the breast crease, as well as an incision extending horizontally along the breast crease. Anchor breast lift scars may be more apparent, but this technique also allows for the greatest degree of rejuvenation, and most patients are quite happy with their results.

Dr. Lintner uses the most advanced breast lift modalities available to reduce the size of the incisions. With time, the scars should fade and become smooth white lines. While some light lines will remain, there are many methods of reducing their appearance, including over-the-counter creams and skin treatments. Additionally, it’s important to note that most women are so thrilled with the firmer, more youthful look of their breasts that they don’t mind the scars—which are typically easily concealed by undergarments and swimwear. You’ll want to discuss your concerns with Dr. Lintner during your initial consultation, and he will provide additional information about what to expect from recovery.
