Panniculectomy

Many people who have lost a significant amount of weight, particularly those who have suffered from severe obesity, can take great pride in the fact that they’ve taken a significant step toward better health. However, the initial excitement can turn to feelings of extreme self-consciousness if there is a large amount of loose, inelastic skin on various body areas once the weight is gone. In fact, it is common for people who have lost large amounts of weight to experience excess overhanging skin in an abdominal area known as the pannus – also called the abdominal apron. Fortunately, our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Thomas Lintner, offers an advanced form of tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) that can remove the excess skin and tighten the remainder for a more contoured and firm appearance to the abdomen. The panniculectomy procedure has helped many patients achieve their goals with results that make them feel great about the way they look.

Benefits of Panniculectomy Surgery

A significant amount of loose, overhanging skin in the lower abdomen can not only be the cause of self-consciousness – it can also cause back pain, rashes, skin ulcers, and even difficulties with hygiene. A panniculectomy can be an ideal procedure to eliminate the excess skin and give the abdomen a flatter appearance.

Good candidates for this treatment are typically those who are in reasonably good health overall, as well as those who have had a stable weight for at least 12 months. Panniculectomy surgery can ultimately help you enhance your body contours, and improve your day-to-day quality of life.

The Panniculectomy Procedure

While a panniculectomy is a form of abdominoplasty, there are some important differences in how the surgery is performed compared with a traditional tummy tuck surgery. A panniculectomy primarily involves the removal of excess skin that is hanging over the belt line and pulls the remaining skin taut; tightening the abdominal muscles (a focus of traditional abdominoplasty) is not usually a part of this procedure. The exact details of a panniculectomy surgery – including how the procedure will be performed, whether liposuction will be necessary for optimal results, and the length of recovery – will vary based on each patient’s unique needs; however, many patients are back to normal daily routines within three weeks.

Once Dr. Lintner meets with you for an initial consultation and evaluates your goals, he will answer all of your questions and explain what you can expect from the procedure and recovery. Panniculectomy surgery is a very advanced procedure and Dr. Lintner is highly experienced with this treatment. He will take great care to ensure that any residual scarring from the procedure is as light as possible and is easily concealable.
